How to Use the Records

The index is a searchable document of access points to client information, institution names and dates of birth and dates of death (if available) contained in series number NTRS 3754. The reference copy of this index is available in series number NTRS 3761.

Function / Content

This series consists of a master index to files relating to fostering and/or adoptions of children. The files were created to capture applications from prospective foster/adoptive parents and may include assessments of the applicants, correspondence, file notes, approval or denial of applications, fostering agreements, copies of affidavits and birth parent consent documents prepared for legal adoptions heard in the Northern Territory Supreme Court. The index consists of 36 fields containing the following information: box number; file number; file title; date range of file; name of adult client; alternative client names( e.g. alternative spellings, aliases); other adult client names referred to in reports/investigations on file; welfare services provided to adult; adult client name if different from primary client; name and location of welfare institution where adult was placed; name and location of other institution where adult was placed; date or year of birth; sex of client; Aboriginal, Non-Aboriginal or not specified; birth mother name; birth father name; sibling names; spouse name; children of client (not adopted); children of client (adopted) and jurisdiction of adoption; name of child clients; any other names or aliases the child is known by; child date or year of birth; sex of child; child Aboriginal, Non-Aboriginal or not specified; child birth mother name; child birth father name; child sibling names; other child clients referred to in reports/investigations on file; name and location of welfare institution where child was placed; name and location of other institution where child was placed; names of foster parents and location of placement; adoptive parents names; photographs on file; other file references; and, remarks.
